Process
The Arbitrary Forms Studio began in the 1970s in a warehouse in Cambridge Springs, PA. The studio location has moved several times since, but the process continues. Sculpture is being produced under the brand Robert Milnes Studio while vessels are being produced under the brand Arbitrary Forms Studio. All ceramic objects are handmade, unique items made predominantly from either white earthenware or white stoneware clay produced locally in Asheville NC. Forming techniques include coils, slabs, press molded, and extruded shapes, most often in combination. The ceramic pieces are fired in electric kilns, generally in a two to three firing process. The work of a large number of technicians and skilled craftspeople is necessary to produce the materials used in the studio. All finished pieces though are the work of one person, Robert Milnes.
